Employee engagement – your key priority for 2021

Author: John Tarrant

I think we all endured 2020 rather than enjoyed it but, here at DNA, we committed at the start of COVID to ‘come out stronger’. And in that respect 2020 has been a beneficial experience for us.

As with many organisations we have looked inside ourselves with renewed focus. We have gone back to basics to re-establish our mission, to define and articulate our values and to find our ‘Why’. It’s been a year where, more than ever, people seek meaning and hope in their work. And where people need to be connected, engaged and given a sense of belonging – and hope and ambition for the future. We’ve done a lot of that for our clients and we’ve done it for ourselves.

The year at DNA has been a successful one, we have added 7 new staff, added more new clients and are 30% up year on year in terms of gross profit. This has been a tremendous team effort so it would be remiss of me not to thank our clients, our suppliers and our brilliant staff (and their families who support them and help them be brilliant).

So, what does 2021 look like? In short, it’s going to be a slog and more of the same until Easter. That means that organisations need to connect and engage their staff, stop the thinning of work relationships, deliver on health and wellbeing and set the plan in place for the recovery. We are the 5th largest economy in the world, and despite the current unemployment figures, there will still be more good jobs than people to do them. Even with Brexit and COVID, this isn’t a systemic issue like the financial crisis of the late noughties. The economy is broadly OK. House builders will keep building, interest rates will stay low and we will all go on holiday again. One thing which all commentators agree on is that the workplace has changed forever and that the second half of 2021 will see a significant spike in staff turnover. Companies who failed to connect and engage their staff during COVID will suffer. The good news is that for many of those it’s not too late – but urgent action is needed. And the better news is that there are some great agencies – not just DNA – who can help.

With that in mind, here’s to a safe, peaceful and brighter 2021.
