‘Big Data’ is one of those buzzwords that has been circulating for a few years now. It’s quite scary. BIG DATA. Businesses have focused so much attention into collecting it - as much as possible - and housing it in their databases, that it becomes this huge, complex monster and we just don’t know what to do with it all!
Well, the next big thing is coming to sweep Big Data aside. Say ‘hello’ to Big Design - how we actually use data once it has been collected and processed. This is ultimately the most important thing right? What’s the point in having all this data if we don’t use it in the best way? Well, Big Design doesn’t necessarily need Big Data. In fact, it actually only needs a small amount of data, so long as it is the rightdata.
And even better? We’re creating so much real time, in depth data via social media (1,820TB every minute!) that you’ll probably find a lot of what you need is already available at your very fingertips. You just need to know what you’re looking for so your messages land in front of the right people at the right time (I wrote a short blog about how you can use social data to amplify your social media strategy here).
But what’s the catch? Online social data changes quickly so it has a short shelf life. You’ll need to be prepared to move fast to get the best results!
